In today’s world, Green is the go word. Everywhere, people around us are making efforts to reduce pollution and hence conserve the earth. Nokia are known for following some of the greenest manufacturing practices in the handset market today and Sony Ericsson have begun to take notice too. With the launch of the Green Heart series of phones, Sony Ericsson has proved that one need not destroy the earth’s already fragile eco-balance to make a good quality phone.

Design and Looks
The Hazel is part of what Sony Ericsson calls Green Heart phones. This new line of phones is made out of recycled plastic and what not in a bid to reduce the pollution. However, the phone's build does not really reflect this as it feels like a high-quality handset. The Green Heart also features human curvature design which basically means the handset is contoured to fit the human palm more snugly. This is evident from the curved back and alphanumeric keypad. And surely enough, the phone fits in the palm like no other, boosting its ergonomic feel.

Before we move along with the rest of the review, we must mention that it's not just the materials on the phone but the low power consumption charger and the lack of a hardcopy of the manual (no need to worry, there's one pre-installed on the phone) that are part of SE's efforts to make this a less polluting handset. The phone's body is also splash resistant which could also place it in the rough-and-tough handset segment.

Lately, we've been seeing improvements in the displays of SE handsets and the Hazel is no exception to the rule. The large 2.6 inch screen of this slider produces a whopping 16-million colours over QVGA resolution. Naturally this translates into vivid images and sharp display contrast. To top it off, the display is covered by scratch resistant mineral glass that we also seen on the T650i. Below the keypad is a well laid out D-pad with the soft-keys surrounding the pad. All the controls here are well laid out and are very easy to use.

To alphanumeric keypad is hidden under the display and sliding out the lower half of the chassis reveals it. It must be noted here that despite the human curvature design, the curved bottom slides in and out seamlessly. Moving along, the keys are flat and sport a very short keystroke but are big and respond with a definite press and hence are the mark of good design. We won't say that this phone is an ideal SMS machine but the keys are not so bad that you can't dial the occasional number on it easily.

The phone is powered by the Flash Lite user interface and is very pleasing to the eyes. Widgets on the homescreen are also available for some important apps. There is good social networking integration for Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and appropriate widgets for the same. There is Media Center too with auto-rotation for fun and easy access. The media playing applications are nice but it's nothing new; there's an audio player, an image gallery and video player.

The phone's 5MP camera is pretty good. It snaps good photos but the images definitely show signs of noise and aggressive over-sharpening. The one good thing about this camera is that it's capable of recording VGA videos at 30 frames per second. Camera features include geo tagging and face and smile detection. Yes, if you didn't know already, this phone has GPS with A-GPS support. Navigation is provided by Wisepilot navigation.

Now for the bottom line- if you're environmentally conscious buy this phone. If you're not, then still go ahead and purchase it as it's a great phone anyway.
